Online Part-time Students

We have created this space to help answer some of the questions part-time online students might have about enrolling in January Term HGSE in-person courses. This FAQ will be updated as new enrollment information becomes available.

Will I have enrollment priority in the lottery-based enrollment process?

Part-time online students will have priority in the lottery process for online and flexible courses. However, part-time online students will have the same chances as residential students in the lottery event for HGSE in-person courses.

How many overall credits can I take of any modality in January Term?

The maximum number of credits any HGSE student can take in January Term is 4. Participation in January Term is optional and so there is no minimum credit level that must be taken. As a reminder, for the Fall and Spring Semesters, and per the HGSE credit limit policy, part-time Ed.M. candidates must register for a minimum of 6 credits and a maximum of 10 credits per semester and have a maximum of 48 credits overall toward the degree. Credits for courses taken during May, June, July, August, or January do not count toward the fall or spring semester minimums, though they do count toward the overall degree program minimum (32 credits) and maximum (48 credits).

How do I make sure I’m in compliance with Harvard University COVID precautions, including the vaccination, testing, and masking requirements of all individuals who visit or work on campus?

As required by all Harvard community members working on campus, it is mandatory for you to be vaccinated, wear masks indoors, and test regularly. These important safety precautions are described in detail at HGSE’s Coronavirus website.

Preparing for a campus visit:

Below are the required steps for those planning to come onto the Harvard Campus this Fall, which must be completed in sequence. For those of you tentatively planning to come onto campus in November or J-Term, please complete the steps below as soon as possible because the entire process can take as long as 15 business days. (For those not intending to come to campus until after winter break, follow these required steps and stay tuned for possible future updates to this procedure depending on how COVID-related conditions evolve and our efforts to continually improve our processes over time.)

  1. Submit your COVID vaccination and immunization information using the Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) Patient Portal. Please note that HUHS is the repository for this information, regardless of who your healthcare provider may be, and that it can take up to 10 business days for HUHS to verify your information.
  2. Log onto Harvard’s Crimson Clear platform and verify that you have successfully uploaded your vaccine information. Should you need assistance or have any questions related to steps 1 or 2, email HUHS Medical Records or call HUHS at (617) 495-4414.
  3. Once you verify that your vaccine information has been accepted in Crimson Clear, complete the HGSE Campus Access QuestionnaireImportant Note: Once you indicate on the questionnaire that your vaccine information has been successfully uploaded into the HUHS Patient Portal, this will be checked, and a hold will be placed on your my.Harvard account until this step is completed or you email safety@gse.harvard.edu advising us that your plans have changed and you no longer plan to come to campus at this time.

Can online part-time international students enroll in January Term IN-PERSON courses?

No. It is very important to note that due to federal immigration regulation, online international students who are enrolled in the online program are not eligible for an I-20 to enter the US. Questions from international students wishing to participate in optional, on-campus opportunities should email Senior Program Coordinator Andrea Le who will verify all questions with the Harvard International Office (HIO). International students should also be aware that there may be new or continuing travel complications related to the pandemic and changing rules and policies.
