# Cross Registration

## Information for HGSE Students

Like HGSE course registration, cross-registration into any of the other Harvard schools and MIT is done through [**my.harvard**](https://my.harvard.edu/)**.\***

Please note that classes at other Harvard Schools may start earlier than HGSE classes. Other schools may also open cross-registration later than registration for their students. If you plan on cross-registering for a course outside of HGSE please follow the steps below. You may also view [**How to Cross Register in my.harvard** ](https://harvard.service-now.com/ithelp?id=kb_article&sys_id=2cd9131ddb350fc4a752f1a51d9619eb) or [**Cross Registration Frequent Questions**](https://registrar.gse.harvard.edu/sites/g/files/omnuum3991/files/2026-06/Cross%20Registration%20FAQs.pdf) for more detailed information.

1. **Add the desired course to your Crimson Cart** beginning on the date your Cart opens for the term. If you are not eligible to add the course yet (or at all) this option will be grayed out. [**The Academic Calendar** ](https://www.gse.harvard.edu/community/students/academic-calendar)includes all HGSE relevant dates. Other schools' academic calendars may list the date they open cross registration to other other schools. If you have questions about other schools' deadlines you can view [**the complete Registrar contact list**](https://harvard.service-now.com/ithelp?id=kb_article&sys_id=d6017299db550f80a752f1a51d961941) and reach out to their Office of the Registrar.
2. **Validate the course.** This will inform you if you are able to to move forward with enrollment at this point.
3. If validated, once you click enroll, you will likely see a submit petition button. **Submit the petition for the course.** The approval and timeline is at the discretion of the instructor and/or the host school's Registrar. Orange ◷ is pending approval, Red X is denied, Green ✓ is approved. Some schools require the Registrar's approval after instructor permission is granted. The information icon will state where you are in the approval process.
4. Once permission status changes to green you may **enroll in the course** using the Enroll/Validate/Delete button. **The approval does not automatically enroll you in the course.**

**With cross-registration the deadline to add or drop a course follows the earlier of the two school's deadlines**. Familiarize yourself with both HGSE's and the other school's add/drop deadline.

\*If you are interested in cross-registering into the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, please submit this form to gain access to the [Tufts Cross Registration System.](https://tufts.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1Fxc8m3eOKv24Jv?Q_JFE=qdg) **You must also register through my.harvard and follow all enrollment deadlines.**

**Things to consider while cross registering:**

- Due to differences in the academic calendars of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, students are cautioned that spring 2027 grades for MIT courses may not be received in time to count towards May 2027 graduation. **Students should** **carefully consider whether to take an MIT course in the final semester**. Under no circumstances should MIT Spring courses be taken in order to reach the minimum credit requirement for graduation.
- Credits and units vary among schools; please click on the Credit Conversion tool on my.Harvard Course Search Tab to determine credit count at other schools. Similarly, Harvard schools and MIT have different registration deadlines and start dates; to determine such dates, click on the Cross-Registration Dates tool. Courses taken at other schools through cross-registration may be added or dropped only until the HGSE add/drop deadline, unless the host school’s deadline is earlier, in which case the other school’s deadline supersedes that of HGSE.

Please note that HGSE students have preference for Lottery-based Enrollment courses at HGSE. Non-Harvard students are not eligible to enter course lotteries.
